Madonna, who once dated Tupac, took her daughter Mercy James to visit the Tupac exhibit on her Birthday.
Turning 16-year old was Mercy James, daughter of iconic pop singer Madonna. What better way to celebrate her birthday then to visit the ‘Wake Me When I’m Free’ exhibit in Los Angeles. Created in collaboration with the Shakur Estate, the ‘Wake Me When I’m Free‘ exhibit dives into the greater meaning of his activism, music, and revolutionary art, as the exhibit educates and enlightens attendees through a labyrinth of emotions, as they take this journey through his extraordinary life.
As shared by Madonna on her Instagram, the pop icon and her daughter posing together at the exhibit. “Introducing Tupac and his love for books and words and poetry to Mercy James on her birthday,” Madonna wrote on her IG Story Sunday night (January 23). Indeed they did. Madonna and Mercy posing in front of Tupac poems such as “In The Event Of My Demise” and Untitled.”
Tupac and Madonna a couple?
Tupac and Madonna dated briefly in the early nineties. In fact, it was Rosie Perez who was responsible for playing cupid. According to Rosie Perez, it was Madonna who approached the up and coming actress for the hook up. “I go to the bathroom, I bump into Madonna and she goes, ‘Girl hook me up!’ I was like really?,” Perez explained during an interview with Brian Custer. “She goes,’ Yes. Hook it up.. please!” The connection was made possible due to the fact that Rosie Perez’s date stood her up at the 1993 Soul Train Music Awards. When Tupac became aware by talking to Perez on the phone, Shakur immediately came to the rescue.
“I go back to my seat and I was like Pac, you won’t believe this but you know Madonna? He was like, ‘Yeah.’ I go she wants to hook up with you,” Perez said and without hesitation Shakur accepted. “Before I could finish, he just got up out of his seat and was like, ‘Where is she c’mon,’” Perez said.
Tupac and Madonna quickly connected says Perez. “The next week you saw her walking down the red carpet with a bandana on her head.” The two were photographed that night on March 1, 1994 at the Interview Magazine Party in New York City.
Madonna and Tupac link up with Snoop Dogg
Appearing on the Howard Stern show, Snoop Dogg recalled the time Tupac and Madonna came to see him in New York. Snoop was in town to perform at SNL, when Tupac came to hook him up.
“One time before he was on Death Row records, when he was just my homeboy, after we had met at the Poetic Justice wrap party, I was in New York. I was doing Saturday Night Live, and he was out here,” says Snoop. “He was like, ‘What’s up my n**** where you at.’ I’m like, I’m at Saturday Night Live. I’m like I ain’t got no dope. That’s when it was hard getting weed over here. I’m like cuz, I ain’t got no dope.”
Tupac wouldn’t waste any time to save his friend, quickly showing up backstage at SNL (Saturday Night Live) with a bag of weed and Madonna. “So, he pulls up, but guess who he pulls up with? He shows up with Madonna,” Snoop said. “He tells her have a seat. She looks at me. I look at her, I say, ‘Oh wow, that’s Madonna.'”
Tupac’s break up letter to Madonna
In 1995, the almost two year on-and-off relationship between Tupac and Madonna came to an end. The break up came via a letter written by Tupac to Madonna while Shakur was in prison. A letter which became public as it was auctioned off in 2019 by a former friend of the iconic singer, despite Madonna’s fight against it. In June 2019, New York Supreme Court Judge Gerald Lebovits dismissed Madonna’s lawsuit against her former friend Darlene Lutz, as the Judge stated the statue of limitation to recover her items had passed.
Madonna’s defense was that she never knew Darlene Lutz was in possession of Tupac’s letter until she read about it online in 2017. The Judge wasn’t buying her defense one bit especially with the fact that Madonna back in 2004 signed a settlement agreement relinquishing ownership to every item Lutz possessed. One of those items was indeed the Tupac breakup letter. Madonna was also advised by the Judge to sue her own brother, Christopher Ciccone, since he gave some of the items to Darlene Lutz.
Tupac’s full letter to Madonna
“I’ve waited a long time 2 finally write this mainly because I was struggling to find all the answers so that I wouldn’t leave any unanswered questions. First and foremost, I must apologize to you because like you said I haven’t been the kind of friend I know I am capable of being. Not because I am evil or because you weren’t worthy but at the risk of sounding over dramatic, the effects of racism make it difficult for a young black male to properly show affection for an older white woman. Can u understand that? For you to be seen with a black man wouldn’t in any way jeopardize your career, if anything it would make you seem that much more open & exciting. But for me at least in previous perception I felt due to my “image” I would be letting down half of the people who made me what I thought I was.
I never meant to hurt you. As a matter of fact I was honestly stuck on you but I got scared. I didn’t want to be another “toy” or another one of many. Also, I read somewhere in an interview where you said “I’m off to rehabilitate all the rappers & basketball players” or something to that effect those words cut me deep seeing how I had never known you to be with any rappers besides myself. It was at this moment out of hurt & a natural instinct to strike back and defend my heart & ego that I said a lot of things I have since come to regret.
But you know how f*cked up society can be. If it wasn’t then I could openly show you how I felt anytime, anywhere and you in return could show your support for me in the open not just anonymously. Can you feel me? In the time since, as u can see, I have grown both spiritually and mentally. It no longer matters how I’m percieved. Please understand my previous position as that of a young man with limited experience with a extremely famous sex symbol who also happens to be known to every man, woman, and child in the world.
Please remember me not for my shortcomings but for the good times and the magic that we shared (assuming of course that I meant anything 2 u). Now my outlook is different everyone is judged and treated not by their color or fame but on how they treat me and because you have been so kind even in the midst of my craziness I offer my friendship once again this time much stronger & focused. If you are still interested I would like to further discuss this with you but some of it couldn’t wait. I felt compelled to tell you…just in case anything happened 2 me.
Please be careful Madonna. Everyone is not as honorable as they seem. There are those whose hearts bleed with envy & evil. They would not hesitate to do you harm! Let my 5 bullets be proof of that!
P.S. If there is any information you can share with me regarding Jack & crew please do. It could very well be a matter of Life & Death.
Alwayz,
Tupac
