Celebrating its 24 year anniversary, Tupac’s “Greatest Hits” continues to break records on the Billboard 200, trailing Eminem and Drake.
Released two years after Tupac’s demise, the “Greatest Hits” compilation is now the fourth longest-charting rap album of all-time, spending 450 weeks on the Billboard 200. Featured on the double album, are hits such as “Keep Ya Head Up,” “Hail Mary,” “Hit ‘Em Up,” and “Brenda’s Got a Baby.” But perhaps it was the unreleased global hit “Changes” which continues to propel the album into the history books.
Written by Tupac Shakur when he was 19 years old, “Changes” along with “three other songs “God Bless The Dead,” “Troublesome ’96,” and “Unconditional Love,” were the only previously unreleased songs on the project. Accompanied by a music video, “Changes” did not see immediate success in the U.S. only peaking at number 32. But the song, just as Tupac’s legacy has stood the test of time. Back in 2020, “Changes” became the anthem heard all around the world during the protests against police brutality.
Now Tupac’s “Greatest Hits” finds itself making history. Currently sitting at 450 weeks on the Billboard 200, Tupac trails Eminem’s greatest hits compilation, Curtain Call (607 weeks), Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city (526), and Drake’s Take Care (508 weeks).
