YG Meeting Tupac Shakur’s Mother Killed Alive Rumors

West coast rapper, YG, recalls the moment in which he realized Tupac was not alive after speaking to Tupac’s mother.

Recently interviewed by Theo Von, YG detailed meeting Tupac’s mother Afeni Shakur. Asked to guest speak at an event leading up to the 2015 Grammys, the Compton native’s words about Tupac made his mother shed a tear.

Back in the first week of February 2015, the GRAMMY Museum debuted its latest exhibit — All Eyez on Me: The Writings of Tupac Shakur. The GRAMMY Museum showcased the rapper’s love of words and his talent as a gifted communicator through handwritten lyrics and poems.

“Tupac Shakur was one of the most original and important of all hip hop artists. His writings are both powerful and provocative. It is an honor to be the first music museum to acknowledge Tupac’s legacy and to bring context to what was an incredible career,” said Bob Santelli, Executive Director of the GRAMMY Museum.

YG who was coming off his 2014 Blame It On the Streets released via Def Jam, was asked to participate at the event.

“They wanted me to come speak on behalf of the new generation, like Tupac’s impact on us. The motherf***as who grew up listening to ‘Pac when he passed,” explained YG on This Past Weekend podcast. “His mama came to me crying and said, ‘I love what you said about my son.'”

The next words from Afeni Shakur ensured YG’s theory was incorrect this whole time. “She’s like, ‘They really killed my baby.’ I’m like, God damn. Bro that s*** f***ked me up cause I thought ‘Pac was alive. I thought ‘Pac was alive. Bro, my whole life I thought ‘Pac was alive. But that day I’m like nah dawg he’s gone,” said YG describing the moment as incredibly sad.

Two years later and YG along with Snoop Dog, T.I., Alicia Keys and Treach, would pay tribute to Shakur. Appearing at the 2017 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony, YG rapped Tupac’s lyrics as he linked with Snoop on stage to perform “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted.”
