Raekwon Hears Tupac’s “Old School” For The First Time 26 Years Later

Appearing on Revolt’s Drink Champs, Wu-Tang’s Raekwon and Ghostface Killah heard Tupac’s “Old School” off Shakur’s third studio album.

Continuing their incredible run with understanding guests, co-host N.O.R.E. invited Raekwon and Ghostface Killah as they spoke about Wu-Tang, their solo careers and more. One of the topics at hand was the beef between Tupac and Biggie.

Aside from breaking down the Pac-Biggie beef and Wu-Tang Clan remaining neutral as Hip Hop started to become divided between east and west coast, Tupac viewed as a Cali or New York artist became a discussion.

“When I see Pac, I see New York too,” N.O.R.E. said. “Did you ever hear his record and nothing but the old school?” For Raekwon, he had never heard the 26-year-old record. A record which was on Tupac’s third studio album “Me Against The World.” The album was released while Tupac was in prison and gave us hits such as ‘Dear Mama.’ The album would also debut at number on the Billboard chart, making Tupac the first artist to ever have a number one album behind bars.

Raekwon, Ghostface Killah Hear ‘Old School’

After hearing ‘Old School’, Reakwon was amazed. “It gave me an extra respect from him. I never heard it and I’m listening to what he is saying, so he’s from there,” Raekwon explains. “When a brother start talking like that, that means he know what it is. But, like I said you can take a New York n—a anywhere.”

Remember poppin’ and lockin’ to Kurtis Blow, the name belts
And Scott LaRock the Super Ho back in Latin Quarter
When Slick Rick was spittin’ La Di Da Di
Gamin’ the hoochies at the neighborhood block parties
I remember, breakdancin’ to Melle Mel
Jekyll and Hyde, LL when he Rocks the Bells
Forget the TV, I’d rather hit the streets and do graffiti
Be careful don’t let the transit cops see me
It ain’t nuttin’ like the old school!

Raekwon added, “Pac always represented a real ni–as tale in his own way. He got hurt. They shot him in the face. Whatever happened, happened. And, he never got to the end of it. It’s like you coming into a situation with respect and you get hurt, yo that ishh can turn us into enemies.”
