Too Short On Tupac Moment: I Knew He Was Somebody

Too Short, appearing on The Outlaw Show, shares the moment when he first knew Tupac Shakur was “somebody.”

Many who have had the pleasure of watching Tupac in real time always have stories to tell till this day. Some have their own recollection of a particular moment that instantly grabbed their attention and realize a star was right in front of their eyes.

For Too Short, that very moment occurred back in 1991. As Tupac danced and carried bags for Digital Underground throughout the group’s incredible run, Shakur waited for a moment where he could capitalize and kickstart his rapping career.

This very moment occurred when Shock G let Tupac jump on Digital Underground’s Same Song. Appearing on the Nothin But Trouble movie soundtrack, Same Song finished with Tupac and the 20-year-old rapper did not disappoint.

“Now I clown around when I hang around with the Underground
Girls who used to frown say “I’m down” when I come around
Gas me and when they pass me they used to diss me
Harass me, but now they ask me if they can kiss me
Get some fame, people change, wanna live their life high
Same song, can’t go wrong if I play the nice guy
Claimin’ fame, must have changed now that we became strong
I remain still the same (Why, 2?) ’cause it’s the same song,” Tupac (Same Song)

Appearing The Outlaw Show hosted by Outlawz member E.D.I. Mean, legendary west coast rapper Too Short instantly knew Tupac was a star when he watched the Same Song music video.

“When he jumped out of that hearse in the Digital Underground video for Same Song, I knew he was somebody,” said Too Short. “Cause they were platinum and he just jumped out and stole their song.”

From there on, Tupac would create timeless classics and music that till this day is relevant and heard throughout the world. Four studio albums released prior to his passing and seven released posthumously. Not to mention movies such as Poetic Justice in which he starred alongside Janet Jackson and the iconic Ernest R. Dickerson film, Juice.

“‘Pac was special. I still can’t till this day figure out how did a 25-year-old and younger be that person,” said Too Short on EDI MEAN TV. “I can’t figure that sh** out. Younger than 25 on that level. I still can’t get on that level.”
