After years in production and multiple delays, FX’s Dear Mama has an official release date. Set to premiere on FX, April 21, 2023 at 10 p.m. ET/PT, which includes the first two episodes of the 5-part series. Concluding on May 12th, two days before Mother’s Day.
From Allen Hughes, the award-winning director of critically acclaimed The Defiant Ones, comes FX’s Dear Mama, a deeply personal five-part series that defies the conventions of traditional documentary storytelling to share an illuminating saga of mother and son, Afeni and Tupac Shakur.

Back in 2019, FX announced they would air a new Tupac docuseries, led by the Hughes Brothers. The two brothers have reunited after eleven years for the project. Allen Hughes has full access to Tupac’s released and unreleased material, writings, and poetry. All of which was granted by the Tupac Estate.

Hughes Brothers won’t take on this project alone. Joining Hughes are producers Lasse Jarvi, Charles D. King, Tom Whalley, and Tom Pellegrini. Dr. Dre will contribute to the docuseries, joining his long time friend Allen Hughes.
Dear Mama will be told through the eyes of the people who knew them best. Jasmine Guy, Jamal Joseph, Tim Roth, Mike Tyson, Mickey Rourke and more have been confirmed for the series. Snoop Dogg will also contribute to the series and will provide perhaps the series its most emotional moment. According to Allen Hughes, Snoop Dogg was interviewed in the very same hospital room in Vegas in which Tupac laid before passing away.
