Tupac Request to the Outlawz Finally Explained

Tupac Shakur’s request to the Outlawz is finally explained, which affected their music career and time with Death Row records.

Prior to forming the Outlawz, Tupac always played the big brother role when it came to members of the legendary group. Many of which were either blood relatives or childhood friends. Regardless, Tupac always made sure to look out for his comrades.

When it came to Death Row records, Tupac Shakur still had the best interest of the Outlawz in mind. Tupac, who signed to Death Row records under a 3 album deal, was ready to meet his obligations at an incredible pace. With less than a year on the label, Tupac had already released a double album in All Eyez On Me, along with two other albums in the works — The Don Killuminati: 7 Day Theory and One Nation.

Up next were the Outlawz. Featured throughout Tupac’s albums, the Outlawz were ready to make their impact in hip hop. As Tupac prepared the Outlawz for greatness, he requested one thing in particular.

This request was brought to light by Outlawz member Hussein Fatal. According to Fatal, Tupac asked the Outlawz not to sign with Death Row records.

Until now, Tupac’s request was fully explained. During a recent episode of Talk My Truth, host EDI Mean detailed the truth behind Tupac’s request.

“I know over the years, a lot of people have quoted Hussein Fatal when he said he didn’t sign to Death Row, because Tupac didn’t want us to sign with Death Row. That’s partially true. But partially incorrect,” said EDI.

“At the time when Tupac said don’t sign with Death Row, it was for a reason. And that reason was because he said, ‘Nah, y’all gonna sign to me. Y’all my group. Y’all gonna sign to Makaveli records,'” explained EDI.

Although Tupac was ready to launch his own label using his alias Makaveli, Shakur was still going to do business with Death Row records. A distribution deal with Suge Knight’s label would help to release Outlawz projects.

“We would’ve been put out by Makaveli records, but distributed by Death Row records,” confirmed EDI. With Tupac’s tragic demise also came the end of any possibility for Makaveli record label to ever come to fruition.

With that being said, the Outlawz did eventually decide to sign with Death Row records for a couple of reasons. One of those reasons was that Interscope Records were taking too long to work out a deal with the Outlawz.

“We had a lot of music over there. That music meant something to us. A lot of that music ended up being the Still I Rise album,” explained EDI. “Now if we leave Death Row and we part ways with Death Row, we part ways with that music in a lot of ways.”
