Tupac, Afeni Docuseries’ “Dear Mama” Teaser Premieres On Mother’s Day
FX and the Tupac Estate have announced “Dear Mama” the new Tupac and Afeni docuseries with its first official teaser on Mother’s Day.
Three years in the making, the Tupac and Afeni docuseries is set to premiere fall of 2022. From Emmy Award®-nominated director Allen Hughes (The Defiant Ones) comes a five-part cinematic television event exploring two voices, activist Afeni Shakur and hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur, that could not be silenced.
Originally titled Outlaw: The Saga Of The Shakurs, ‘Dear Mama’ will be told through the eyes of the people who knew them best. Snoop Dogg, Jasmine Guy, Jamal Joseph, Tim Roth and more have been confirmed for the series. (More on the upcoming docuseries here)
The five part series is an intimate wide-angle portrait of the most inspiring and dangerous mother-son duo in American history, whose unified message of freedom, equality, persecution and justice are more relevant today than ever.
Back in 2019, FX announced they would air a new Tupac docuseries, led by the Hughes Brothers. The two brothers have reunited after eleven years for the project. Allen Hughes has full access to Tupac’s released and unreleased material, writings, and poetry. All of which was granted by the Tupac Estate.
Hughes Brothers won’t take on this project alone. Joining Hughes are producers Lasse Jarvi, Charles D. King, Tom Whalley, and Tom Pellegrini. Dr. Dre will contribute to the docuseries, joining his long time friend Allen Hughes.
The official teaser was released on Mother’s Day, which makes perfect sense for all the right reasons. Back in 1995, Tupac released his iconic ‘Dear Mama’ single, which helped the rapper’s third studio album ‘Me Against The World’ to go number one as Shakur spent time behind bars. Tupac poured his heart out on the song and revealed to the world his rocky yet loving relationship with his mother, who he forever appreciated.
